Fire Confined to Single Boat
Just one week after Marine
Firefighting Inc. presented its upstate New York seminar on "Small
Boat and Marina Fires", the West Crescent, New York Fire Department got
a chance to put some of that training into practice when called to a boat fire
in a neighboring community. Our seminar stressed the need of protecting exposures.
The attendees were told that in this marine environment either the exposed vessel
or the vessel on fire could be moved to protect exposures. And that's just what
they did! The adjoining
boat was cut loose, moved from the fire area, and thus prevented the fire from
extending to any other boat.

Chief Steve
Bonesteel, who supplied these
photos, wrote to us, "Wanted to let you know your course happened just
in time. Monday night we were activated mutual aid to W/Boght FD for a working
boat fire, IT WAS! We had several exposures and the only damage was done to
the boat that caught fire....thanks again for everything. Training once again
paid off." I wrote back to the chief, "No one injured and only
one boat damaged - Congratulations, that's a successful operation. I'm happy
to hear you say that something from my Marine Firefighting
Inc. seminars may have helped to prevent injuries or further damage."

Is your Department trained in small boat and marina firefighting?
During all of my seminars I constantly stress safety by repeating
several basic rules for marine fires. One of those
rules I mentioned, SEVERAL TIMES, was to use the reach of your stream for the
safety of your Firefighters. I guess these Firefighters must have been listening
to my words at the seminar. Chief Bonesteel again wrote, "Thank you
again for your training seminar, I can only think it helped us to open our eyes."
Always keep in mind the explosive potential of a boat fire. If there is no life
at risk, don't risk yours! A quote from my seminar
states, "Don't let an incident that would have
only required a call to the boaters insurance company escalate into one which
forces you to call a Firefighter's next of kin!"

If you have a marina or
a body of water in your district then you need
this information. Please keep Marine Firefighting Inc.
in mind when you plan your training schedules. Whether it's for our seminar
on Small Boat and Marina Fires, or one of our many other seminars, we will deliver
the information that will allow you to do your job while insuring the safety
of your members and the public. Chief Bonesteel's final comment to me was, "Again
thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us I think we all came
away with learning something." Chief, one of
the reasons that your Department did so well is because they have a Chief who
cared enough to supply the needed training.
The Coast guard will not fight marine fires. It will
be up to Municipal Fire Departments.
